EXT. SPACE - X

WE GLIDE down through the atmosphere, through the Cumulonimbus cloud, closer and closer.

As WE CONTINUE TO PUSH IN, until WE ARRIVE at one small suburban neighborhood during a storm. Over the PUSH-IN, WE HEAR the following narration by A WOMAN.

NARRATOR (V.O.)
Birthdays, are a time when we make wishes. They say that wishes are the key to fulfillment, and that they have the power to transform our lives in ways we could never imagine. But what they don’t tell you is that every wish comes with a price, that the consequences of our desires can be more than we ever bargained for... submitted here is the story of the little twin girls, and a magical birthday wish that changed their lives... forever.

EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT

NARRATOR (V.O.)

It began in 1999, in a town just outside Boston.

WE SEE a car screeching to a stop in front of a house, WAYMOND (52), rushes out of his car, a bag covering his head from the rain. He hurries towards the front door of the house.

INT. WAYMOND’S HOUSE - NIGHT

Waymond enters the house, shaking off the rain, his wife JUDY (50’s) greets him with a warm smile.

WAYMOND

It’s raining cats and dogs outside, unbelievable. Where’s my birthday hat?

Judy kisses him on the lips and places a colorful birthday hat on his head.

JUDY

Would you like me to make you some hot water?

WAYMOND

No, thanks. I don’t want to miss the birthdays. Where are the girls?

JUDY

They’re in the dining room, waiting for you.

Waymond hangs his wet coat on the rack and follows Judy to the dining room.

DINING ROOM

RUBY and GARNETT, identical twin girls around (7) years old, sit at the table playing with their Barbies. They both wear birthday hats, and there are balloons and decorations around them.

WAYMOND

Happy Birthday, my little gems!

RUBY/GARNETT

Thank you, Daddy!

Judy approaches the table with a large birthday cake with candles.

JUDY

Who’s ready for some cake?

RUBY/GARNETT

(jumping up and down)

We are!

Waymond takes a seat at the table and Judy starts to serve the cake.

WAYMOND

(to Judy)

Where are the boys?

JUDY

Upstairs, I think. They’re probably buried in their magazines.

WAYMOND

What magazines?

Judy takes a seat next to Waymond.

JUDY

Those magazines that your dad sent them.

WAYMOND

Oh, right.

(beat; shouting)

Thomas, Edison, come here! Don’t miss your sisters’ birthday!

JUDY

Try not to be too loud, dear. We don’t want to wake up Maria. She finally fell asleep after crying for three hours.

WAYMOND

Sorry.

Suddenly, they hear footsteps coming down from upstairs, it’s THOMAS (14) and EDISON (16) walk to the dining room, looking disheveled and engrossed in their magazines.

THOMAS

Dad, check out this new issue of Oppenheimer’s Science! They have an article on the latest technology!

EDISON

(skeptically)

Who needs technology? I’d rather read about classic cars.

WAYMOND

(chuckles)

Well, I’m sure there’s something in there for everyone.

JUDY

Wear your hats, boys.

They put on their hats, and Judy starts to light the candles.

JUDY (CONT'D)

(to Twins)

Now, you both close your eyes, and make a wish, okay?

The Twins nod, and they begin close their eyes.

WAYMOND

Wait! We need to sing “Happy Birthday” first!

Everyone joins in to sing the song, and when they finish, Waymond encourages the Twins to make a wish.

A moment.

RUBY/GARNETT

Amen.

WAYMOND

No, keep your eyes closed!

The Twins grin, and close their eyes again.

WAYMOND (CONT'D)

Now, open your eyes.

As the Twins open their eyes, they see a gift from their father. The Twins excitedly open their gift and pull out matching necklaces with a gemstone pendant.

GARNETT

Oh, they’re beautiful! Thank you, Daddy!

RUBY

Thank you so much, Daddy!

WAYMOND

You’re welcome, my little gems, and don’t forget to thank your mother for the delicious cake.

JUDY

It was my pleasure.

Judy hands each of the Twins a slice of cake and Waymond stands up to make a toast.

WAYMOND

To my beautiful daughters, Ruby and Garnett. May all your dreams come true.

JUDY

(to Waymond)

And to their big brothers, who keep them grounded and always keep us on our toes.

Thomas and Edison roll their eyes, but grin at the same time.

EDISON

(to the Twins)

You two are getting so old now. You’re almost as old as Dad!

GARNETT

No, we’re not. Dad is ancient.

Waymond playfully swats at Edison.

WAYMOND

Hey now, watch it.

JUDY

So what do you two want to do for your birthday? Any special plans?

Edison interrupts.

EDISON

Can we go to the amusement park?

RUBY

No way! I want to go to the water park!

GARNETT

It's my wish, Mom, to try the water park, like my friends did!

JUDY

(to Garnett)

You can't just blurt out your wish like that, or it's gonna end badly.

THOMAS

Sounds like a plan to me.

Waymond looks around the table at his family, feeling grateful for their health and happiness.

WAYMOND

As long as we’re all together, it doesn’t matter where we go or what we do. Being with all of you is the best birthday present I could ever ask for.

Judy smiles at Waymond and takes his hand.

JUDY

We are so lucky to have each other.

The family continues to celebrate the birthday.

INT. WAYMOND'S HOUSE - DAY

The family is getting ready for the water park. Waymond’s phone rings and he steps away from the group to answer it.

He looks at the screen, and his expression changes to one of disappointment.

WAYMOND

(into phone)

Cleveland? Are you sure there’s no one else available?

There’s a pause as Waymond listens to the response.

WAYMOND

Okay, I’ll do it. Thanks for letting me know.

He hangs up and walks back to his family, who are putting on their sunscreen.

JUDY

Everything okay, honey?

WAYMOND

I just got a call from work. They need me to go to Cleveland for a few days.

The family’s smiles fade as they realize what this means.

RUBY

Daddy, you can’t come with us to the water park?

WAYMOND

No, sweetheart, I’m sorry. I wish I could, but I have to go.

GARNETT

But it’s our birthday celebration.

THOMAS

Hey, don’t worry, we can still have fun without Dad. Right, guys?

EDISON

I agree with him this time.

He looks around at his family and tries to get them to smile.

JUDY

I can’t believe they’re making you work on our family vacation.

WAYMOND

I know, I’m sorry. I wish I could be with you all.

RUBY

It’s okay, Daddy. We’ll have lots of fun and we’ll tell you all about it when you come back.

Waymond hugs Ruby, tightly.

WAYMOND

Okay, sounds good. You guys have a great time, okay?

The family nods and they all hug Waymond before heading out to the car. Waymond watches them leave and then heads back inside to pack for his trip.
